Northern California’s Park Fire, ignited on July 24, quickly became one of the largest wildfires in state history. The blaze began after a man allegedly pushed a burning car into a gully, sparking a massive inferno. Within hours, the fire had driven thousands to evacuate the area north of Sacramento. Amid the chaos, one fleeing resident faced an agonizing choice when their truck broke down. They were forced to leave behind the vehicle, along with two Rottweilers and their litter of puppies.
A Daring Mission
As the fire raged, the Butte County Sheriff’s Office received information about the abandoned truck’s location from the distraught owner. Unfortunately, the advancing flames had already made the area inaccessible. But four days after the evacuation, search and rescue official Trevor Skaggs took on the challenging mission to save the stranded animals. Skaggs was flown by helicopter to the remote location above Cohasset, where he would have to navigate the dangerous terrain to reach the dogs.
Upon arriving, Skaggs ran 1.5 miles through smoky and perilous conditions. Remarkably, he found the mother and her puppies alive, though extremely thirsty and exhausted. Tragically, the puppies’ father had not survived the ordeal. Skaggs provided the surviving dogs with water and small bites of a protein bar to help them regain strength and to earn their trust.
A Remarkable Rescue
In a heroic effort, Skaggs then guided the dogs back to the helicopter on a 1.5-mile trek through the harsh conditions, managing to get all the animals safely aboard the helicopter. They were flown to the Chico Airport, where they were met by the North Valley Animal Disaster Group (NVADG). The group has since taken responsibility for the care of the animals, offering them shelter and medical attention.
The sheriff’s office and the animal rescue group shared the story of the successful rescue widely, emphasizing Skaggs’s dedication and the resilience of the animals. NVADG has been actively working to care for animals displaced by the fire, taking in over 145 animals of all shapes and sizes.

The Park Fire continues to impact many lives, but stories like these remind us of the strength and compassion that emerge even in the most difficult of times.
