As the world opens up post-pandemic, tourism is booming, and Europe is seeing an unprecedented influx of travelers. Amidst increased tourist taxes and restrictions across popular destinations like Spain, Italy, and France, Copenhagen stands out with a unique approach: rewarding eco-conscious tourists.

Copenhagen’s Eco-Conscious Rewards Program

This summer, from July 12 to August 11, Copenhagen will run an innovative initiative called Copenpay. This program, launched by the Danish government, encourages tourists to engage in environmentally friendly activities in exchange for various rewards. Visitors can earn perks like free public transport, entrance to attractions, and other benefits by participating in sustainable actions such as picking up litter, using green transportation, or volunteering for short tasks.

Sustainable Tourism With Copenpay

Copenhagen, renowned for its commitment to sustainability, has been awarded the European Green Capital prize and aims to become carbon neutral by 2025. Copenpay aligns perfectly with this vision. By promoting activities like biking instead of driving, working in urban gardens, or helping maintain the city’s cleanliness, tourists contribute to the city’s green goals while enjoying their vacation.

Tourists who participate in the program will receive a GPS map highlighting eateries, tourist attractions, and other services where they can earn credits. These credits can then be redeemed for rewards such as a free lunch, a cup of coffee, a kayak tour, or a museum entry. The program’s design encourages visitors to the city to pledge to sustainable behavior, which benefits them and supports the city’s environmental efforts.

A Win-Win For Tourists And Locals

Despite no government reimbursement, around 15 local businesses have signed up for the Copenpay program, reflecting the community’s strong support for sustainable tourism. These businesses offer rewards to tourists for their eco-friendly actions, fostering a sense of shared responsibility and collaboration between visitors and locals.

The Eco-Conscious Rewards Program is more than just an initiative; it’s a movement toward a greener future. Even if only a small percentage of tourists participate, the positive impact on the environment and the mindset shift towards sustainability are significant. As Copenhagen officials put it, this program offers tourists “an amazing souvenir” to take back home: a greener mindset and a memorable experience of contributing to one of the world’s most sustainable cities.

Working Together To Go Green

Copenhagen’s green ethos is further reinforced by its infrastructure and urban planning. The city boasts extensive bike lanes, eco-friendly public transportation, and green spaces. These elements not only enhance the quality of life for residents but also offer tourists an immersive experience in sustainable living. By participating in Copenpay, visitors get a firsthand look at how sustainability can be seamlessly integrated into everyday life.

The rewards program also highlights the collaborative spirit of Copenhagen’s community. Local businesses, without any government reimbursement, have eagerly joined the initiative. This cooperation between the public and private sectors underlines the city’s commitment to creating a sustainable and enjoyable environment for both residents and tourists.
